Hondoq ir-Rummien
Situated close to the village of Qala, the sandy cove with crystal clear waters, known as Hondoq ir-Rummien, is an extremely popular swimming spot among locals in the summer months. It is also perfect for divers who wish to explore the Gozitan marine cave treasures. Traditional saltpans, some of which are still used today for salt harvesting, run along the Hondoq coastline. In addition to all of these rich qualities, this cove also harbours and nurtures some rare plant species and is therefore of great environmental significance.
Ramla Bay
Ramla Bay, a wide and sandy beach in the north of Gozo, is known for its particular reddish sand, from which it in fact derives the name which is often used to refer to it – Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra, meaning red sandy beach. The Ramla area is also of archaeological importance, with Roman remains buried beneath the sand and the legendary Calypso Cave – deemed to have been Homer’s dwelling as described in The Odyssey – situated to the west of the bay.
San Blas Bay
San Blas Bay, accessible from Nadur village, is a peaceful, red-sand beach spanning just a hundred metres, which one can only reach on foot. A uniquely quiet and unspoilt natural environment surrounded by lush valleys, this small sandy bay is a favourite among snorkellers. Ta’ Sopu, a 17th century coastal tower built by the Knights, stands majestically on the promontory overlooking this wonderful beach.
